Vehicle Damaged With Stolen Gun in New Bedford Shooting

NEW BEDFORD — A vehicle was damaged after a New Bedford man shot it with a stolen gun in a South End shooting on Wednesday evening.

Sawyer Street resident Marcus Hubbard, 21, has been taken into custody after police said detectives caught him running from the scene of the shooting.

Police said that organized crime detectives were already in the area when they heard shots fired from about two blocks behind them at around 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Det. Nathan Almeida and Det. Matthew Sylvia were heading north on South Second Street, but immediately left their cruiser and ran towards the sound of gunfire.

They saw Hubbard allegedly running from the scene through a nearby driveway, stopped him, and took him into custody as patrol officers arrived to assist.

Police said multiple .380 shell casings were found near 600 S. Secont St., and a parked vehicle had been damaged from gunfire.

A loaded Ruger handgun was also found in a nearby garbage bin.

Police said the pistol was later found to have been stolen out of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.

Hubbard is being charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, receiving stolen property, damaging property, and trespassing.
