UMass Dartmouth Has Significant Impact on Massachusetts Economy

The University of Massachusetts is having a record impact on the Massachusetts economy. UMass Dartmouth is doing its share by contributing $618.3 million to the state's economy. The local campus is also responsible for 2,960 external jobs across the state.

The UMass Amherst-based Donahue Institute released a report that says spending by UMass students and faculty, construction projects, and university purchases of goods and services are driving a record $8.3 billion economic impact across the five-campus system."

"As a center of undergraduate and professional education, as well as research and innovation, the University of Massachusetts is a key driver of the Commonwealth's economy and workforce, helping to set Massachusetts apart as it competes, both domestically and globally," according to Mark Melnik, director of economic and policy research at the Donahue Institute.

State House News Service reports, "The analysis also determined that the university system is responsible for nearly 40,000 external jobs across the state, that more than 330,000 university alumni live in Massachusetts, and that the university issues 20,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees each year."

The campus impact is: UMass Amherst: $2.9 billion and 13,222 external jobs; UMass Chan Medical School: $2.2 billion and 10,872 external jobs; UMass Boston: $1.2 billion and 5,516 external jobs; and UMass Dartmouth: $618.3 million and 2,960 external jobs.

The impact of the university's central administration was $241.6 million and 1,339 jobs.

In addition to the $8.3 billion campus-wide impact on the state's economy, the university makes ninety research facilities available to small and medium-sized Massachusetts companies for an additional $364 million impact on the state's economy.
