NEW BEDFORD - Two New Bedford residents are arrested for trying to assault police officers in separate incidents.

Police say around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a disturbance near County and Division Streets for a fight in progress. At the scene, police found 20-year-old Luis Samuel Ortiz screaming obscenities and being loud. When he refused to calm down, he was arrested for disturbing the peace, and tried to kick a police officer as he was being placed in the cruiser, resulting in an assault charge.

Later that evening, just after 11 p.m., police were called to a disturbance at George Street and Brock Avenue. As police were breaking up the disturbance, 22-year-old Dominique Ward began screaming loudly and cursing, making it impossible for police to take down information. As she was being placed under arrest, she kicked an officer. Ward is charged with disturbing the peace, interfering with a police officer, and assault and battery on a police officer.
