Twin River Management Group wants to close Newport Grand and build a full service casino on a 45 acre site alongside Route 24 and 81 in Tiverton near the Massachusetts Border.

The chairman of the Twin River board of directors, John Taylor said the project will allow Rhode Island to compete with future Southeastern Massachusetts casinos.

Tiverton Town Council President Denise deMedeiros says she's not sure the casino plan is a good thing. She says the Council needs more information.

Twin River recently announced an agreement to buy Newport Grand. The new casino proposal needs both voter and state approvals, and a transfer of Newport Grand's gambling license.  (Metro Networks Inc)
