A Dartmouth man is being charged after running a red light at a high rate of speed and damaging utility poles.

New Bedford Police say the accident occurred before midnight Wednesday when the 26-year-old man driving a Chevy Silverado truck failed to stop as he was headed south from Route 140 onto Brownell Avenue. Witnesses say the truck was travelling between 70 and 80 miles per hour through the intersection when it struck two street signs, four small trees, and two utility poles before coming to a stop.

The driver was not injured, though there was extensive damage to the truck. Police have cited the driver with wreckless driving.

The accident caused power outages in the surrounding neighborhood. Eversource was on the scene Thursday morning making necessary repairs.
