The Cookie Monster Challenge at Pine House Kitchen in Tiverton was designed as a team effort, but it took just one determined man with a serious sweet tooth to make history.

Shawn Butler, a competitive eater and YouTuber "Basketlockerball" known for tackling outrageous food contests, became the first person ever to conquer the giant cookie skillet challenge – and he did it solo, in just five minutes and 28 seconds.

The challenge is no joke: a two-pound house-made cookie skillet piled high with 15 scoops of ice cream, intended for two people to finish in 10 minutes. When Butler showed up, Pine House owner Jared Machado quickly realized this was no ordinary guest.

“He said, ‘I’m here to do the challenge,’ and I asked, ‘Where’s your partner?’ He goes, ‘It’s just me,’” Machado told Fun 107. “I was like, oh, this guy’s not messing around.”

He wasn’t. Butler made quick work of the massive dessert, demolishing it with over four minutes left on the clock, treating the monstrous dessert like it was “a cup of kale soup,” Machado said, still in awe.

A YouTuber With a Heart

Butler, a competitive eater for five years, also took time to film his experience for his YouTube channel, even capturing footage from the kitchen while the dessert was prepared.

He won $200 for completing the challenge solo (normally $100 per person), and then Butler generously donated $100 back to the restaurant, thanking them for the hospitality and the experience.

“He was super genuine,” Machado said. “Afterwards, he just chilled at the bar for about an hour and a half to recover. Didn’t even drink anything, just hung out. He didn’t even act like it was a big deal.”

The Bar’s Been Set

Butler now holds the title of first and only winner of the Cookie Monster Challenge and will be the first photo on the Wall of Fame at Pine House Kitchen. Other hopeful challengers have already stepped up, only to fall short and walk away with a newfound respect for the man who beat the odds.

“He shocked the whole place. Everyone was watching him in disbelief,” Machado said. “He’s in shape, quiet, not flashy, and just destroyed that skillet like it was nothing.”

Think You Can Take It On?

The Cookie Monster Challenge is still active at Pine House Kitchen and the cost is $25 per person, but if you win, the fee is waived. If you're not up for dessert, there's also the Hot Wing Challenge: 50 wings in 20 minutes for a shot at free wings for a year.
