Today is the Great American Smokeout! This is the national movement to inspire you to quit smoking for good. Go 24 hours without smoking and see what happens! If you need a little help to keep that cigarette at bay, here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Choose a quit date within the next two weeks. Write it down, mark every calendar. Hold yourself accountable for that day! We recommend today, since there's already a nationwide event supporting you.

2. Speaking of support, you might want to let your loved ones know about your intention to stop smoking. Their encouragement might help you on those days that your will power seems to be failing you. And it never hurts to have friends on your side.

3. Start to "crave" something else. Earlier this morning, Pete told us about his struggle to quit smoking at first. He found that replacing the fixation with a Tootsie Pop was a great alternative to his vice.

4. "Lead us not into temptation." Do yourself a favor...get rid of all the reminders of your habit. The cigarettes, the matches, the lighter, anything associated with smoking is only going to trigger a craving. Don't torture yourself with temptation.

5. Medical professional can help you quit by recommending nicotine patches, gums, or medicines. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist today!

6. Pete decided to reward himself at the end of every month when he first quit smoking. He took the money he would've spent on cigarettes and bought himself something nice. After 12 whole months, he bought a leather jacket. We are very proud to say that he's gone 23 years smoke free. Go Pete!
