Three members of the same Fall River family have pleaded guilty to failing to properly take care of an elderly relative who died in a hospital suffering from severe bed sores and malnourishment.

Prosecutors say 80-year-old Mary Araujo died at a hospital in July 2010 of multiple organ failure brought on by blood poisoning. Her illness was the result of bedsores in contact with her own urine and feces.

Her son-in-law, 52-year-old Duarte Cabral, and two grandsons, Keith Cabral and Scott Cabral, were sentenced to 2 years in jail each Monday.

Araujo's daughter and another grandson are free on bail while awaiting trial in the case.

The Herald News reports that lawyers for the three men who pleaded guilty said their clients were remorseful. (AP)
