The final X's and O's need to be hammered out, but according to "well placed" sources, New Bedford may soon have a medical marijuana dispensary, open for business, by years end.

Beacon Compassion Center will be located on Hathaway Road, at the old Wicks and Licks site. You may know the area better as between Captain Franks and the storage facility at the Rte. 140 entrance ramp. Still lost? The area is way outside the homeowner zone and nowhere near a current bus route.

I understand the Mitchell administration's concerns about marijuana sales near residential neighborhoods, but other regulated products like beer, booze and butts are prominently sold in these communities. Why the double standard?
