This New England State Drinks More Alcohol Than Any Other in U.S.

October is definitely a popular month for drinking.

From Halloween parties to Octoberfest events, alcohol of all kinds presumably sees a bump in sales every time this year.

While three out of every five Americans admits to consuming alcohol regularly, some states were found to drink more than others.

And one New England state drinks more than any other state in the nation.

Website VinePair.com decided to crunch the numbers of drinking in each state around the country and learned that per capita, New Hampshire consumes the most alcohol in America.

Based on the amount of alcohol sold per person living in the state, each New Hampshire resident drinks about 4.43 gallons of alcohol per year.

You have to think though, with the lack of sales tax on alcohol in New Hampshire and the number of out-of-staters who might travel to buy there, this number may not be exactly accurate.

Still they top the list, which also happens to see every other New England state land in the Top 25 as well.

After New Hampshire at #1, Delaware took a close second place with 4.40 gallons of alcohol per resident and Washington D.C. was third with 4.07 gallons per capita.

For New England overall,

Vermont was #8 with 3.13 gallons per person
Maine landed #12 with 2.97 gallons per person
Rhode Island was #15 with 2.87 gallons per person
Massachusetts was #18 with 2.79 gallons per person
Connecticut was #23 with 2.53 gallons per person

At the end of the 51 state list (with Washington D.C. included) was Utah with just 1.30 gallons of alcohol consumed per person each year.

VinePair.com also calculated how many overall gallons of alcohol were sold over a one year period and there Massachusetts was the top New England state with 16.6 million gallons sold.

That was good enough for 12th place overall, with California selling the most alcohol at a whopping 88.6 million gallons per year.
