It's a proven fact that hugs can relieve stress, calm nerves, and overall make people feel better.

The Samaritans of Greater New Bedford and Fall River are hoping to raise $20,000 this month and are using hugs to do it.

Executive Director Darcy Lee is urging area residents to donate $5 to the Samaritans during September as part of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and post photos of hugs on Facebook and Instagram to raise awareness about the need for people to help one another.

Darcy Lee stopped by Townsquare Sunday this week to promote the fundraiser and discuss the important work her organization is doing in Fall River and New Bedford.

Townsquare Sunday is a weekly public affairs program heard every Sunday at 6 a.m. on 1420 WBSM. It features interviews about individuals and organizations that are working to make the SouthCoast a better place to live
