An 18-year-old Mattapoisett man accused of shooting two men in New Bedford, killing one of them, has been ordered held without bail.

Jon Zell was arraigned in New Bedford District Court Monday morning and no plea was entered on a litany of felony charges, including murder, in connection with the death of 40-year-old Angel Cruz.

Zell was arrested following a chaotic shooting spree that began around 10:30 a.m. Friday. Shots rang out in the area of Lafrance Court and police found Cruz suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Saint Luke's Hospital, where he died. A second gunshot victim, a 32-year-old New Bedford man, crashed his vehicle in the area of Linden and County Streets while trying to drive himself to the hospital. The man was later listed in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

About 45 minutes after the initial shooting, Zell was spotted near Penniman and Reynolds Streets and he allegedly fired a handgun at police officers before he was taken into custody.

Zell is charged with murder, carrying an illegal firearm, carrying a loaded illegal firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and 10 counts of armed assault with intent to murder. He will appear in court at a later date for a competency hearing.

New Bedford Police initially said that Zell is a Marion resident. Court documents list the suspect's address in Mattapoisett.
