New Bedford High dedicated its new state-of-the-art fitness center to Bobby Watkins, a star football player for New Bedford in the late 1940s who went on to play for Ohio State and the NFL's Chicago Bears.
NEW BEDFORD - A new fitness center at New Bedford High School has been completed.
The new center can accommodate up to 70 students at a time, whereas the previous fitness center could barely host twelve people working out.
Thomas Tarpey, Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics with New Bedford Public Schools says the new center is "probably one of the best high school facilities
The New Bedford School Committee voted to name the new fitness center at New Bedford High School the “Robert Archibald 'Bobby' Watkins, Jr. Fitness Center” after former Chicago Bears Player, Ohio State University football Hall of Fame Inductee, and New Bedford High School alumnus Bobby Watkins.
