Suspicious Device Reported at New Bedford’s Market Basket
NEW BEDFORD - An emergency perimeter was established in the parking lot of Market Basket in New Bedford this morning after reports of a suspicious device.
New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the device was found a few minutes before noon. "People thought it was a pressure cooker, and based upon recent events here in the United States we took precautions and called in the State Police Bomb Squad," said Gomes.
X-rays of the device were taken, and it was determined the suspicious package was nothing more than an electric deep frying machine that had been left in the parking lot. The machine was returned to Market Basket.
Chief Gomes says at no time was there any danger to the public.
