A suspect in a motor vehicle stop opened fire on Boston police and seriously wounded an officer before being killed by authorities. An apparent innocent bystander also was injured.

The shootout happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Friday in the city's Roxbury section.

City Police Commissioner William Evans says the wounded officer was shot just below his right eye and is in critical condition in an induced coma at Boston Medical Center. The officer's name hasn't been released.

Evans says the suspect died at the scene, and a middle-age woman suffered a flesh wound to her arm.

Evans says two other officers were brought to a hospital with stress-related problems.

The commissioner says the wounded officer is on the police Youth Violence Task Force and is a highly decorated military veteran.
