A new study by the UMass Dartmouth Center for Policy Analysis says Southcoast Health Systems generates $1.4 billion a year in the region's economy. The study says Southcoast employs nearly 7,000 people in a variety of jobs, and for every 100 jobs created, another 70 jobs are created in the region by companies that do business with Southcoast. According to Center Associate Director David Borges, Southcoast is also working with local colleges.

Southcoast Health Systems operates St. Lukes, Tobey and Charlton Memorial Hospitals in the region. The study also showed that the average wage paid to Southcoast employees is 18% higher than other industries in the region, and 6% higher than wages paid to others working in the health care sector.
