Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Rick Sullivan has announced over $300,000 in funding to create a walking path on the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier.

The $352,800 grant will finance a 10-foot wide walkway atop the barrier, complete with lighting, benches and handrails.

State Senator Mark Montigny has been influential in earmarking the funds for the project, and tells WBSM News he hopes the project will inspire similar walking paths.

A timeline for the hurricane barrier walkway is not yet complete.

The grant is one of four Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities grants announced today by Secretary Sullivan.
