NEW BEDFORD — A small oil spill in New Bedford Harbor this morning has been contained.

New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the spill was discovered at about 9:35 a.m. this morning in the area of the south terminal.

"An estimated 25-30 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled," Gomes said. "The Coast Guard and the (Department of Environmental Protection) began investigating, and we brought in Frank Corp. to do the recovery, to recover what materials could be recovered, and we cleared the scene within an hour, although Frank Corp. will be spending the better part of the day there."

According to Gomes, weather and tidal conditions aided in containing the spill.

"At the time, the tide was rising and the wind was holding a majority of the diesel fuel against the pier, which was helpful," he said.

Gomes said the Coast Guard is still investigating the cause of the spill, taking samples from vessels in the area.
