After being ratified by the city officials and the New Bedford Educators Association last week, the School Committee made their decision to approve the union's one year contract extension Monday night.

The contract will increase teacher compensation and professional development.

Teachers at steps one through eleven will see an increase of $500 while teachers at step twelve will receive an increase of $1,500. There will also be 20 hours dedicated to professional development for teachers throughout the school year.

NBEA President Lou St. John hopes the agreement will lay down the foundation for future negotiations.

The contract also set new deadlines for retirement and resignations, so positions can be filled earlier in the year.

The new deal will extend through July 31, 2015.
