At least 81 members of the Massachusetts House and some 50 members of the state senate have signed on to legislation known as the "Safe Communities Act."  The proposal would establish Massachusetts as a sanctuary state.  Several other states, including California, New York and Colorado are considering similar legislation.

In essence the designation would prohibit state funds from being used to enforce federal immigration laws.  The act would prevent state law enforcement from collaborating with federal immigration agencies.  Supporters say it's a matter of protecting civil rights and civil liberties.  Most rational thinking people say it's really about providing shelter from deportation for criminal illegal aliens. Many in the area legislative delegation thinks this is a good idea.

Sanctuary state legislation has become and annual filing and has never drawn much support in the past, but since the election of President Trump, and the dawn of the age of resistance, it seems to have attracted a great deal of support.

In addition, State Representative Antonio Cabral, D-New Bedford has filed legislation seeking to deny the Sheriffs of Bristol and Plymouth County the right to share intelligence with federal immigration officials about criminal illegal immigrants who are due for release.  It appears Rep. Cabral would prefer to have these individuals released into the community so that they can offend again.

Providing protection to criminal illegal immigrants is illegal and dangerous.  Government officials who do so should face arrest and imprisonment.
