New Bedford Councilor-at-Large Brian Gomes is facing a big job in the weeks ahead.

Gomes chairs the mayor's commission that is studying the use of force by New Bedford Police.

The commission was formed by Mayor Jon Mitchell shortly after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and subsequent protests in New Bedford and around the country against police brutality. The commission is expected to issue its recommendations sometime in August.

Gomes says the commission has met several times virtually and plans a virtual public hearing to hear the concerns of local residents.

Gomes spoke with Townsquare Sunday this week about the work of the commission so far, and what that public hearing might look like.

Townsquare Sunday is a weekly public affairs program heard every Sunday at 6 a.m. The program highlights individuals and organizations seeking to make Greater New Bedford a better place to live.
