Funding for charter schools has always been a topic of discussion.

Governor Gharlie Baker announced during his inaugural address that he would like to raise the funding cap for charter schools.

Representative Tony Cabral isn't against funding the schools, but wants to see the funding come from somewhere other than the school districts.

He says although funding follows the students, schools still have fixed costs that are picked up by the city.

Cabral doesn't want charter schools draining the school department funding. He says if the state wants high level charter schools, it should fund them separately.

There are currently 71 charter schools in Massachusetts, including three in New Bedford.
