Jonah may or may not have lived in a whale. The story sounds a tad fishy, but who am I to argue with the Old Testament? Then there's Geppetto – you know, Pinocchio's dad – who we are told was swallowed by a giant whale while out looking for that wooden-headed kid of his.

Movie Myths vs. Marine Reality

The release of the film Whalefall got me wondering what life inside a whale might be like, but alas, no documented cases exist of a human winding up in a whale's belly. Science News said most whales don't have throats big enough to swallow a human, and are generally inclined to avoid munching on people anyway.

In the film, a teenage diver is swallowed whole by a sperm whale and spends an hour trying to escape. You can watch for yourself to see how it all turns out.

The 2021 Cape Cod Whale Incident

While being consumed by a whale is a bit far-fetched, a Massachusetts commercial lobster diver found himself in the closed mouth of a humpback whale while diving off Provincetown in June of 2021.

NBC-10 Boston reported that 56-year-old Michael Packard of Wellfleet was diving "when he suddenly felt pain as the world around him went dark." The station said Packard "realized he was in the closed mouth of a whale and thought he was going to die."

40 Seconds Inside a Humpback Whale's Mouth

Packard told WCVB-TV, "It's either he's gonna let me go, or this is where I'm going to die." After about 30 to 40 seconds in the whale's mouth, Packard said the creature surfaced and spat him back out into the ocean.

Packard suffered only minor injuries from the ordeal, including a dislocated knee. Now he's got a whale of a tale to tell to anyone who'll listen.
