Possible Attempted Kidnapping in Acushnet

ACUSHNET —  After rumors about an attempted kidnapping at Cumberland Farms on July 4 spread on social media, Acushnet police have confirmed that an incident did take place.

Acushnet Police Chief Chris Richmond told WBSM on Monday that the department is following up on an incident that occurred at about 3:30 p.m. in the Cumberland Farms parking lot on Sunday.

Richmond wrote that a juvenile boy was sitting in a car with his older sibling while their mother was inside the store when an older adult man called out to him from another vehicle.

The man motioned for the boy to come over, the chief stated.

But the boy ignored the man and locked the car doors.

According to police, the man then drove away.

The boy's mother called the police when the boy told her what had happened.

Richmond said that officers were following up on July 5, and that more information would be disclosed if anything comes of the matter.
