New Bedford Police have obtained an arrest warrant for a man who allegedly carjacked a woman Tuesday night.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating 37-year-old Francisco Sanchez. He does not have a known address.

The victim was coming out of a business at County and Kempton Streets Tuesday night around 6pm when a man she identifies as Sanchez threatened her with a sharp object, jumped in her passenger's seat, and ordered her to drive.

Several blocks later when the woman pulled over, the suspect took her pocketbook and cellphone while the woman escaped and ran from the scene flagging down a passerby at County and Sycamore Streets.

The hijacked car was found by police 20 minutes after the incident at County and Mill Streets and was towed to the North End station to be processed.

The victim was able to ID the suspect by going through photos in her high school yearbook.

Anyone with information on Sanchez's whereabouts is asked to call detectives at 508-991-6300 ext. 320.
