Motorists driving along Interstate 195 through New Bedford, Dartmouth and Fall River Tuesday afternoon reported seeing multiple fires along the roadway and described the experience of driving through thick smoke.

Now the Dartmouth Police Department says the series of fires "were lit" and are asking anyone with any information regarding "the identity of the individual(s) responsible for the fires" to contact Massachusetts State Police.  Dartmouth Police made the plea in a Facebook post.

According to scanner traffic, multiple crews responded to the brush fires lining the interstate on a dry and windy day.

State police can be reached at (508) 820-2300.
