Students and faculty members with the Early Childhood Program at Old Rochester Regional High School are trying to squeeze one more day of outdoor fun before the really cold weather sets in.

Event Details: When, Where and Cost

The Fall Family Fun Day is set for Saturday, November 8 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the ORR school grounds at 135 Marion Road in Mattapoisett. Admission is $5 per person.

Teacher Liz Kennedy and junior Kennedy McKay stopped by Townsquare Sunday to promote the event and tell us what the Early Childhood Program is all about.

"We thought about doing a Trunk or Treat event, but a lot of organizations are doing that," Kennedy said. "We're going to do something different."

What to Expect: Activities and Learning Experiences

"During our Family Fun Day, there will be some educational opportunities," Kennedy said. "For instance, a cranberry grower will be coming to teach kids about cranberries, also some fall animals will be on display, and we'll have some games as well, like guess the weight of pumpkins, plus other surprises."

There will be snacks and refreshments, and a Scholastic book fair, which according to Kennedy, everybody loves.

Student Voices: The Early Childhood Program in Action

McKay is a student in the Early Childhood Program and enjoys her time in the classroom.

"I enjoy going into the preschool program and helping the kids do activities and make fun little lesson plans," she said, noting she thinks "there's a really good chance" she will work in child care once she graduates from high school.

Growing the Program: Enrollment and Expansion

Kennedy said she's hoping to expand the Early Childhood Program at ORR. "We have 27 freshman students this year," she said. "Forty-two students applied, but we can only manage so many. It's only going to get bigger."

The Fall Family Fun Day welcomes all families. The $5 admission charge per person will be cash only.

"The admission charge will enable us to ramp up other activities we do," Kennedy said. "The money will also offset the cost of bus transportation needed to place junior and senior students into child care settings in the community."

The SouthCoast Hot Wing Project

WBSM's Tim Weisberg and his son Adam spent six months touring the SouthCoast area from New Bedford to Fall River to Dartmouth to Norton and beyond, trying some of the supposed hottest wings around – and also gave some other unique wing flavors a shot, too. Sadly, not all of them are still around, but the project lives on in spicy infamy.
