New Bedford Police and cleanup crews were called to the North End Wednesday afternoon to a report of an oil spill on the road.

According to police, the 50-gallon drum of home heating oil spilled in the back of an oil burner service box truck, and leaked out onto Belleville Ave between Coffin Ave and Collette Street.

Police and fire crews arrived on the scene just before 3:30pm, blocking traffic for an hour-and-a-half.

The oil was cleaned up by Department of Public Works and Frank Corporation crews.

The road has been reopened and traffic is proceeding normally.
