A new initiative to stem gun violence throughout New England was announced in Providence Wednesday. Mayors and law enforcement officials of the New England Regional Gun Violence Summit, headed by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, touted a new partnership between New England communities that seeks to reduce trafficking of illegal guns and gun violence.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell says communities that are continuously experiencing gun violence can no longer sit on their haunches. "We can't wait for Washington (D.C.) to act. That's not the way of the world these days. It has to be done at the local level, working together, working across borders," said Mitchell.

The partnership was made possible through a $25,000 grant from The Boston Foundation.
