Mayor Jon Mitchel kicked off New Bedford's annual point-in-time count program at City Hall today.

Teams of volunteers will be walking the streets and checking hot-spots like shelters and transitional houses to count the homeless in the city. This year's focus will be on finding and helping homeless families and youth.

Mayor Mitchel told WBSM Point-In-Time is more than a head count, but a program with long term goals.

volunteers began their work this afternoon and will continue until thursday at 2pm. the statistics they gather will help the city get funding to fight homelessnesss.
