An Update on New Bedford’s Zeiterion Renovation
The historic Zeiterion Performing Arts Center began its complete $37 million renovation in June of this year, a project that will wrap up in late 2025 or early 2026.
Zeiterion President and CEO Rosemary Gill joined Townsquare Sunday this week for the first in a series of reports on the scope of the work being done and the progress being made.
"It is a stunning project," Gill said.
Funding for the project will come from state and federal historic tax credits, ARPA grants from both the Commonwealth and city level, and private philanthropy.
Gill believes the construction crews are making good progress.
"Most of the demolition has now been completed, all of the seats have now been removed in the auditorium, and they are now building a new hydraulic orchestra pit," she said.
The project will also include a new and improved lobby and box office, plus creating new spaces in parts of the building that have been dormant for years.
"The building has been out of code in every fashion that you can imagine," Gill said. "Things like electrical work and areas in non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act are being brought up to code with this project."
To Gill, the Zeiterion is much more than just an entertainment venue.
"It's an educational institution, and has a tremendous economic impact on the city and the region, and contributes to tourism in New Bedford," she said.
Gill said the Z is still raising money for the project. You can learn more by visiting the Z Beyond 100 webpage.
