NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford woman who picked up a $1 million prize in the state lottery last week will be using the cash to pay for her daughter's college — and her own college loans.

Edna Soares won the prize playing the Massachusetts State Lottery's "Emeralds 50X" instant ticket game at the Golden Food Mart in Fall River on Jan. 17, according to masslottery.com.

The New Bedford resident received a pre-tax payment of $650,000 after choosing the cash option.

Along with paying off the college loans and her daughter's college tuition, Soares said she also plans to buy her father a truck.

The 1043 Rodman St. store where she bought the winning ticket will receive a $10,000 bonus for the sale.

Soares' big win comes after one lucky person bought a winning ticket at a Dartmouth Cumberland Farms on Friday, Jan. 13 — but the winner has yet to be identified.
