Having lived in New Bedford for the past few years, I never thought that when I needed a night away from home, I would end up heading to…New Bedford.

However, I recently had a wonderful and relaxing staycation at the Whaler Inn & Suites on Hathaway Road, and honestly, I’m already looking forward to my next overnight stay there.

Sometimes, you just need to get away. You need to stop looking at the same walls and windows, and Whaler Inn & Suites is a place where you can feel like you’re somewhere else all while being a short distance from home. You can feel those vacation vibes but still run home to feed the dog or cat and water the plants.

Entertainment and Dining at Ryan’s Pub

I arrived on a Wednesday night, which was perfect for me since that is also the night that Ryan’s Sports Pub & Billiards inside the Whaler Inn hosts Musical Bingo. In fact, there’s always something going on at Ryan’s every night of the week, both for entertainment and creative menu specials. The entertainment lineup and food and drink specials are always posted on the Ryan’s Sports Pub & Billiards Facebook page. It’s a hidden gem.

I played all four rounds of Musical Bingo and lost them all, but I knew just about every song that was played, so I’ll consider that a win. Plus, I had some of the best steak tips in the city. Try them for yourself, you can thank me later.

Relaxing Amenities That Feel Like a Getaway

It was also nice knowing I could have as many ice cold beers as I wanted, because I only had a short walk back to my suite. I just had two, though, because I planned to hit the indoor heated pool before it closed down for the night.

After taking a few laps around the pool, I spent the next 45 minutes just floating, fully relaxed, with the entire pool to myself. Earlier, it had been full of kids playing and splashing around, but it’s nice to be a grownup and decide your own bedtime.

Once I got back to my suite, it was time for the best part of my entire stay: spending the rest of the evening in the heart-shaped jacuzzi. Whaler Inn has two types of jacuzzi suites, and I stayed in the Lux Suite. I filled the tub with water as hot as I could stand it, turned on the jets, climbed in, poured a glass of wine from my wine basket and tore into the box of chocolate-peanut butter clusters from my self-care basket. With the television tilted toward the tub, I was in heaven.

Once my skin was fully pruned, I got out of the jacuzzi, took a quick shower, and crawled into the premium king-sized bed. It was so comfortable that if I hadn’t had to wake up at 5 a.m. to do my morning radio show from my room, I could have slept right up until my 11 a.m. checkout time.

Starting the Day With Comfort and Convenience

At 6:30 a.m., I took advantage of a news break during the show to walk down to the lobby and hit up the continental breakfast that is included with your stay. I brought back two hot cups of coffee, some oatmeal, and a muffin to fuel me through the remaining two and a half hours of the show.

Once the show was over, I showered (a note for those who care: the shower was hot, the hot water lasted at least 20 minutes, and the water pressure was great), and then packed up and got ready to check out.

Book Your Next Event at Whaler Inn & Suites

Before I left, I had one more thing to check out: the function space. I had been to events at Whaler Inn & Suites before, but had never seen the event space empty. It is quite spacious and can accommodate up to 500 people, depending on your setup needs. It could host just about any event you could think of, and in fact, I think I have a few ideas of my own.

How Much Is It to Stay at Whaler Inn & Suites in New Bedford?

Room rates fluctuate depending on the dates you choose to book, but you can stay overnight right now for as little as $114 a night, which is a great deal considering the cleanliness of the rooms, which are newly renovated, and all of the amenities included. Rooms can be booked directly on the Whaler Inn & Suites website. You can also find cheaper room rates on some of the travel sites, even for the jacuzzi suites.

So if you’re looking for something to do with the kids during school vacation, Whaler Inn & Suites is a great place for the entire family. However, it’s also the perfect romantic getaway for two, or even some downtime for the person who prefers to be alone.
