NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford police have caught a 15-year-old youth with a stolen handgun at the Temple Landing housing development earlier this week.

On July 21, police said Narcotics and Gang Unit detectives seized a firearm from the teenager after numerous complaints from tenants in the Temple Landing development.

According to police, as detectives approached a group in the basketball court of Magnet Park, one kid fled the scene.

The officers said they then saw him hiding a loaded 25 caliber handgun beneath a parked vehicle.

The handgun was found to have been stolen out of Dartmouth.

Police arrested the teenaged suspect and charged him with carrying a loaded firearm and ammunition without a license and receiving stolen property.

New Bedford Police noted in a statement that the department credits citizens who communicate their observations and concerns, enabling officers "to take weapons off the streets before they can be used to create tragedy."
