New Bedford Club Bathroom Might Have City’s Lowest Ceiling
Over the weekend, I was DJing a 50th birthday party at Casa Benfica in New Bedford when I stumbled upon something I genuinely wasn’t prepared for.
The club itself looks great. It's back open again with fresh renovations, a clean bar, and overall, a beautiful space for family functions. The party was rocking, the dance floor was packed, and everything felt top-tier. Then my buddy Brian told me, “You’ve gotta go downstairs and check out the men's bathroom.”
Naturally, I did.
At six-foot-four, I’m used to ducking under doorways here and there. Basements and old buildings? Sure, comes with the territory. But the moment I stepped into this particular restroom, I realized this wasn’t your average low-ceiling situation.
This might be the shortest ceiling bathroom in New Bedford.
A Bathroom Built for Hobbits (and Tall Guys With Strategy)
The ceiling height was so low that I had to crouch just to get into position. We’re not talking cozy. We’re talking “mind your spine” low. I looked up, slightly confused, and that’s when I saw it.
A perfectly square cutout in the ceiling.
The Genius Cutout
Right above the urinal was an eight-to-10-inch recessed opening – just enough space to stick your head up so you could actually stand upright. It’s like the architect said, “We can’t raise the ceiling, but we can raise your head.”

You pop your head into the square, straighten your back, handle your business, and step out like nothing happened.
It’s practical, it’s hilarious, and honestly, as a tall guy, I respect the creativity.
