Reverend Russ Chamberlain is known to many on the SouthCoast. For all of the work that he has done for the New Bedford community over the years, it will come as no surprise to most that someone sent a submission to us for the Spotlight SouthCoast Frontline Heroes program.

Joe Chamberlain nominated Rev Russ because he is an extraordinary person.

“At 67 years old with diabetes, Rev. Russ should have stayed home to remain safe from COVID-19, but he is a man of faith,” Chamberlain said. “Instead, he chose to volunteer at the Salvation Army to deliver a week’s worth of meals to those who had COVID-19 and were in isolation in their homes as well as to people who were handicapped emotionally or physically and were unable to leave their homes to get the meals.”

Reverend Russ’s efforts grew exponentially as a family that he helped care for chose to pay it forward and help him deliver meals.

“He delivered meals to Joanne Lesser, who recently passed away,” Chamberlain said. “She and her family chose to pay it forward once they recovered from having COVID-19 by delivering meals to people's doorsteps. They helped Rev. Russ deliver over 200 meals a week to people unable to come down to the Salvation Army.”

Reverend Russ received another recognition for his volunteerism from Good Morning America. He was featured on the show for the choices he made to help people in New Bedford.

“He continues to volunteer his time and energy to the Salvation Army and has become a vital part of their evening feeding program on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings,” Chamberlain said.

Reverend Russ is known for his spirituality and offers his “Daily Bread” with the delivery of soup and dessert to those seeking nourishment through food and prayer.

“For his willingness to do whatever Major Mike asks of him, to help others with the outreach and ministry during COVID crisis I nominate Rev, Russ Chamberlain to be a frontline hero.”

Thank you, Reverend Russ, for all you do day in and day out.
