Roughly 100 people gathered on the steps of New Bedford City Hall Monday morning for a ceremony observing the 13th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

The ceremony included military veterans like New Bedford Veterans Agent Chris Gomes who lost his right leg fighting in the Iraq war.

Gomes enlisted shortly after seeing the attacks on television during a high school history class.

Mayor John Mitchell called the event a somber occassion to remember those lost but says it can also serve an inspiration for others to engage in service to the country and their community.

The ceremony also included religious leaders such as Inter-Church Council Executive Minister Reverend David Lima as well as the city's police and firefighters.
