New Bedford Police Catch Suspected Supermarket Purse Snatchers
NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford police have arrested two people on suspicion of stealing a purse from a family outside of a North End supermarket.
On Sunday, police officers investigating the alleged purse snatching nearby responded to Riverside Park at Coffin Avenue, where they found a man and a woman sitting in a wooded area with backpacks.
Police said the pair were found to be in possession of a bag that had allegedly just been taken from customers of a nearby store.
The customers had been sitting on a bench and waiting for their car to come around, according to police.
New Bedford residents Wendy Harrison, 43, and 44-year-old Timothy McGettigan, who both live in a 238 Davis St. apartment, were arrested and charged with larceny from a person and possession of an open container.
Harrison is also charged with carrying a knife larger than 2.5 inches.
New Bedford Police Officers Cameron Gullo and Shane Reul made the arrests.
