NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford police have arrested a man wanted on a variety of charges after they found and seized a firearm from him.

Police said on Wednesday, organized crime detectives saw 22-year-old Zahkuan Bailey-Sweeting near Hazard Court.

They recognized him as having two active arrest warrants for charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, extortion, witness intimidation and felony larceny.

According to police, Bailey-Sweeting fled from the detectives into a nearby home that wasn't his.

When the detectives entered the home, police said they found Bailey-Sweeting to have a loaded Glock 43 9mm pistol.

He was taken into custody and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, breaking and entering, and trespassing.

Bailey-Sweeting had previously been convicted of carrying an unlicensed firearm in 2018.
