NEW BEDFORD — The newly renovated Elm Street Garage in New Bedford will be formally opened next week.

City officials, including Mayor Jon Mitchell, will showcase the improvements made to the garage as part of an extensive renovation project that began in 2017.

The improvements include upgraded security, lighting, and structural and cosmetic updates. The New Bedford City Council approved a loan order for $5,039,280 in 2017 to be used for the project, with another $511,254 in award funding from the National Park Service’s Federal Land Access Program and monies from the Downtown Parking Enterprise Fund.

The garage has remained open to the public during renovations. The final upgrades were installed last month.

The Elm Street Garage will be formally opened on Monday, April 22, at 2 p.m.
