A familiar name in the world of law has been named Special Counsel as the City prepares to implement a $366-million settlement between AVX and the EPA.

Mayor Jon Mitchell has appointed former attorney David Waxler, who will help develop policy, review regulations, and evaluate legal documents related to the remediation efforts in the New Bedford Harbor.

Waxler tells WBSM News the EPA has the final say on how the cash is used, but New Bedford has some input as well.

Waxler says the settlement will have a profound impact on the City and residents for decades to come, and the City should be fully prepared to use the funds correctly.

The $366-million settlement is still waiting to be approved by a federal judge.
