NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford man is dead from what appears to be a drug overdose.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office says New Bedford Police responded to reports of an unresponsive male in his Mill Street apartment just after 10:30 a.m. on Monday. The man was found face down on the floor of his kitchen by a friend who was performing a well-being check.

The 46-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for the district attorney's office says a small pile of white powder and a cut straw was found near the man's body.

A toxicology will be performed to determine the man's exact cause of death.

The man's death marks the tenth suspected fatal overdose in New Bedford this month. There were only three fatal overdoses in the city in January of 2018.
