New Bedford Man One of Six Indicted in Prison Guard Attack

WORCESTER — Earlier this week, a fight broke out in a unit of the Sousa Baranowski Correctional Center. Six correctional officers were injured in the melee. Five were treated at a hospital for their injuries.

Six inmates have been indicted for allegedly starting the fight with correctional officers, according to a report from WCVB. One of those is from New Bedford.

Javante A. Antone, 22, was indicted on two counts of assault and battery on a correction officer, according to the report.

Antone was arrested in New Bedford in April of 2017, on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a building, destruction of property, and witness intimidation.

At the time, New Bedford police said Antone, who was 20 at the time, fired a weapon, fled the scene on Shawmut Ave, and made threats against a police officer.

The Souza Baranowski Correctional Center is a maximum-security state prison.
