NEW BEDFORD - A New Bedford man leads police on a chase after allegedly stealing hundreds of dollars worth of food.

Police say Melvin Rodriguez, 26, of 545 Cottage Street, Apartment 2, ran from police after he stole $367 worth of meat and seafood from Market Basket late Sunday morning.

Rodriguez fled on foot, but soon stole a bicycle from a nearby yard and drove it in and out of traffic, according to police. Rodriguez soon abandoned the bike and ran in and out of yards, jumping fences.

Police apprehended him in a driveway on Sawyer Street.

Rodriguez is charged with shoplifting over $100, disturbing the peace, larceny under $250. He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Rodriguez was arrested at 12:20 p.m.
