NEW BEDFORD - A New Bedford man is dead after being placed into protective custody by New Bedford Police.

Jonathan Darling, spokesman for the Bristol County Sheriff's Office, says the 52-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell in the Ash Street Jail at 10:44 p.m. Tuesday. The man was found as guards were making their regular rounds.

CPR was administered to the man as paramedics were en route to the jail. The man was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His identity has not yet been released.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office is investigating the death. Spokesman Gregg Miliote tells WBSM News there is no suspicion of foul play, and the death does not appear to be a suicide.

Miliote says the man had been placed into protective custody after he was found to be intoxicated by New Bedford Police earlier Tuesday.
