A New Bedford man is charged with assault with intent to murder following a stabbing incident late Friday morning in the Downtown area.  Det. Capt. Steve Vicente says the stabbing happened at School Street and Acushnet Avenue.

The suspect, 50 year old Magno Galdamez Rivera was apprehended by Police on Macarthur Drive a short time later.

Police also found a small pocketknife in a trash bin on South Water Street.  They beleive it was the weapon used in the stabbing.

The 49 year old victim was stabbed in the chest, left leg and left arm.  He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is listed in stable condition.
