NEW BEDFORD — Officers responded to a call for people fighting in the area of Seymour Street and East Rodney French Boulevard early on Thursday.

Upon arrival, they observed two males, who had visible injuries. Both parties were bleeding from what appeared to be lacerations to the chest and abdomen areas.

Moments later and within close proximity, other responding officers observed a man walking and encountered him. Based on the total circumstances, they believed the person was involved. The suspect was brought back, where he was identified as being involved in this incident.

Police then arrested Ishmael Mahmoud, 24, of Willis Stret, New Bedford. A search yielded 7 grams of suspected class B substance. Mahmoud is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and possession with intent to distribute a class B substance.

The victims were transported for medical evaluations, their status is unknown, they were alert and responsive to officers on scene.
