NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police arrested a city man Monday after he disturbed shoppers at a local retail store, made threats and then spat on a police officer.

Police were called to the Dollar Tree at 452 Mt. Pleasant Street at 9:30 p.m. Monday, on a report of a disturbance. A male was told to leave the store and subsequently made threats.

Police pursued the man on foot through several nearby yards. When he was apprehended, he spat on one of the arresting officers.

Robert Jones, 39, of 1095 Mt. Pleasant Street, New Bedford, was charged with threatening to commit a crime, disorderly conducting, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer.
