New Bedford Man Arrested for Attacking Elderly Man with Cane

NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford man has been arrested and faces multiple charges for assaulting an elderly person.

At approximately 9:50 p.m. Monday night, New Bedford Police responded to a residence at 55 Austin Street where a victim over the age of 60 was allegedly struck by a man with a cane.  Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Michael Lopez, of that address, and placed him into custody.

Police say Lopez and the victim know each other and that the incident was the result of an altercation between the two that became physical.

The victim was treated for injuries sustained in the attack.

Lopez is charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Assault and Battery on a Person Over 60 with Serious Injury.
