NEW BEDFORD — Part of a major New Bedford intersection will be closed for road work overnight on Thursday, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has announced.

Route 6 eastbound will be closed at the interchange with Route 18 from 9 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday. It was originally slated for Wednesday night but was moved due to the weather.

MassDOT stated the agency will be upgrading the tower lights at the interchange.

The work requires the temporary closure overnight of Route 6 eastbound east of Pleasant Street.

However, drivers will still be able to access the bridge from Route 18 northbound.

The following detour will be in place for motorists traveling towards Fairhaven on Route 6:

Instead of taking Route 6 to the Fairhaven bridge, drivers are asked to take Purchase Street to Hillman Street, then cross over Route 18 and take a right onto MacArthur Boulevard.

Follow the road around the Fairfield Inn, then take a right onto Route 18 northbound at the next set of lights.

From Route 18 northbound motorists will be able to access the ramp to Route 6 eastbound to Fairhaven.

Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays.

MassDOT asks anyone taking the detour to reduce their speed and use caution.

All scheduled work is weather dependent and may be impacted due to an emergency situation.
